Christian Tagliavini's "Jeu de Cartes"
With a penchant for the whirls of fortune and a clin d'oeil to the relativity of vision, the Swiss-Italian artist Christian Tagliavini issues his very own "Carte."

The title means "playing cards," but cards, markings and figures do keep their names and mystery in Italian. You will meet characters clad in imaginary, timeless, paper and textile costumes with selected accents of color, making an original and voluptuous code of décor. Their bodies are real, while their gestures surrender, threaten, implore, betray, poison, seduce or irresistibly elude the viewer.

Lidewij Edelkoort, trend forecaster, designer and visionary from Paris has developed the concept for the exhibition The Pop-up Generation, Design Between Dimensions. "Young generations, born with and behind the screen, live in a shadow world, a no-man’s land between the second and third dimension which they try to connect. This pop-up generation moves from 2D to 3D and back with an ease that makes you wonder if they even notice the difference. The brain is trained to see volume in a 2D sketch and to discover a structure behind the volume, like in an architect’s drawing." 

Christian Tagliavini’s work possesses a cold surrealism as if moments, which are millenniums apart, are jumbled up and thrown back together instigating a stagnant limbo-world eerily familiar but unmistakably distant. They are photographs wherein twenty-first century men and women are frocked in cardboard cut outs. They are awarded a style typical of Mannerist paintings- a movement prevalent within 17th Century Italy. On top of these many tiers of visual idiosyncrasy he also suggests the impression of three dimensions, when in truth there are two, by creating the illusion of a painting within a photograph.

Taking 13 months to complete, 1503 is largely inspired by the masters of the Renaissance, notably Agnolo di Cosimo ( known as "Il Bronzino") who was born in the same year as the title. Using cardboard and paper in place of materials allows Christian Tagliavini to design each item from the patterning to the final construction of the form completely.

His are classically formal portraits of the Mannerist style, elegant exemplars of the courtly Medici ideal of the 16th century, his subjects as haughty as they are assured of their position in society. He was Agnolo di Cosimo, known as Il Bronzino, and his work influenced European court portraiture for a century. Not to mention one Swiss-Italian photographer more than half a millennium later...

First he scouts for models-often plucked off the street-before working on outfits to suit their look. Having settled on a final design, he applies the cardboard to his model and begins shooting - a process that can take up to seven hours per costume.
